The aspirants can have a look at the detailed curriculum mentioned below for the exam preparation of GATE 2026.
Why is GATE Important?
The Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) is a national-level examination, conducted jointly by the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) and seven Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) to adjudge students comprehension of knowledge in engineering, technology, architecture, science, and humanities. GATE serves as a qualifying examination for admission in higher education and also for employment in professional careers by several organizations mostly Public Sectors.
Every year, several students and working professionals appear for the GATE exam to secure admission into master's programs in engineering, doctoral programs in engineering, and institutions such as IITs, NITs, IIITs, IISc, and other top research universities. Qualifying GATE enables students to apply for Junior Research Fellowships (JRF), pursue research roles in ISRO/ DRDO labs, and receive stipends through MHRD scholarships during postgraduate studies. GATE scores are also used for admission to master's and doctoral programs at some foreign universities, such as in Singapore and Germany.
Beyond higher education qualifying examination, GATE scores are also widely used by various Public Sector Undertakings (PSUs)—including BHEL, ONGC, NTPC, IOCL, and HPCL for job opportunities at executive level. GATE tests understanding of conceptual clarity, analytical thinking, and problem-solving abilities. Its specialization options now include interdisciplinary subjects, offering opportunities to a wider class of students.
