CENTRE FOR INDIAN KNOWLEDGE SYSTEM (IKS)

Introduction

Indian Knowledge Systems (IKS) encompass the rich and varied intellectual resources which developed and evolved in the long history of Indian subcontinent. Based on holism and experiential wisdom IKS encompass diverse fields such as philosophy, languages and literature, mathematics, engineering, sciences, astronomy, architecture, agriculture, ayurveda, yoga, visual and performing arts, environmental science and management etc.

In view of the significance of this heritage, Government of India and University Grants Commission (UGC) have stressed on integration IKS with higher education. The intention is to record and document indigenous knowledge, not just in its own right, but within the contemporary challenges of climate change, health and well-being, resources management and social cohesion. Integrating ancient and modern knowledge systems as a basis for innovation, critical thinking and nation building.

In the contemporary education system, IKS is considered as an ensemble of multidisciplinary learning. It invites students and researchers to take into account indigenous viewpoints, work with local communities, and develop culturally rooted (but global) solutions.

Through teaching, research, training, and outreach, IKS initiatives seek to bridge the gap between tradition and modernity, thereby fostering pride in India’s intellectual heritage and contributing to sustainable development in the 21st century.

The Centre for Indian Knowledge System has been established by Mangalayatan University, Aligarh to sensitize and educate the faculty members and students regarding the different aspect of Indian Knowledge.
